The Justice Alliance of Central New York

The Justice Alliance of Central New York is a collaboration between the Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. and Legal Services of Central New York, Inc. to provide free, civil legal assistance to low income families and individuals in thirteen counties of Central New York. We provide our clients legal assistance with 45 lawyers and 17 paralegals, along with hundreds of private attorneys who volunteer their time and expertise helping us in our work. We are governed by Boards of Directors made up of attorneys, clients, and community representatives. We serve Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Otsego, and Oswego Counties.

Who Can We Represent With Our Funding

Our work is supported by more than 50 grants from federal, state, and local government sources, as well as community based organizations such as the United Way. In this time of reduced governmental funding, we are constantly searching for new ways to fund services.

The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. (LASMNY) receives much of its funding from the Legal Services Corporation, New York State Disability Advocacy Project, and the New York State Legislature. With this funding, services are provided to clients who are being denied public benefits, (i.e. public assistance, foodstamps, medicaid and SSI) or at risk of losing their homes. As funding permits, LASMNY handles consumer and family matters as well. LASMNY’s clients must meet eligibility and resource guidelines to establish that they are low income and clients must be United States Citizens or have specified lawful immigration status.

Legal Services of Central New York, Inc. (LSCNY) receives funding from a number of New York State agencies, including the Interest on Lawyers Account Fund (IOLA), the Office of Court Administration, the Commission on Quality of Care and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities, and the Department of Health. LSCNY helps low income individuals and families, including seniors, people with disabilities, and people without access to the courts, with their civil legal needs. LSCNY has brought impact and systemic reform cases in areas including public benefits, housing, foreclosure, language access and employment.

What Are The Results

Our work is far-reaching. Legal services helps low-income families and individuals secure not only the necessities of life, but human dignity. By restoring individuals and families to productive, independent and healthier lives, the entire community benefits.
